1. Sage Accel Fly Rods

Picture

We dig the new Accel Series for Sage. These Rods use Generation 5 technology reimagined with new tapers and design. The fit and finish on these mid priced premium rods is second to none. If you liked the XP or Z rods these deserve a look. Any of the Accel rods would make a fabulous gift.

Sage says,

One of the greatest benefits of always pushing the limits of rod technology is that it gives us vital insights to rod design using previous technologies. Case in point: our new medium-fast action ACCEL family of rods. Created using our responsive Generation 5 technology, our all-new ACCEL benefits from key insights garnered through the development of Konnetic Technology®. Light and ultra-responsive to throw tight wind-busting loops, it’s like going back in time to bet on your favorite sports team with the score in hand—you’ve got a winner and you know it.

2. Winston Boron III TH-MS  micro spey rods

We are so excited about the new Winston Boron III TH-MS rods. These are the hottest sticks of the season and we cant wait to get out on the water with them. Check out What Tom Larimer saidhere on the Winston Blog. Winston Says,

With our innovative Boron III TH-MS rods, we’ve added three light line (3, 4 and 5wt.) trout models to the Boron III TH Two Handed series. Combining the power of a Spey rod and the finesse of a trout rod, they add a new and exciting dimension to the sport. Featuring Boron III technology, these fast action rods excel in a range of Two-Handed situations, from covering big, broad rivers to dealing with tree-lined banks or demanding weather. They have a specialized grip that feels more trout rod than Spey, use slightly larger chrome guides than typical trout rods, and come with a larger tiptop that allows for the larger diameter of the spey style lines.

3. Cold Weather Gear

What do you get a fly angler that has everything? The answer is cold weather gear. It has often been said, "that there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing" and we couldn't agree more. We fish year round and if your angler is not it might be because they do not have the right gear to stay warm, dry and mobile in the cold weather. Above we have featured several of our favorite cold weather items. Simms Extreme Hat and Fold Over Mitts were game changers for us. Nothing keeps your head or hands warm and dry like these awesome pieces from Simms can. We also like Simms Gore-Tex windstopper jackets. We have several different styles and colors in stock.  The Simms Fall Run jacket is the ultimate in insulation layer featuring PrimaLoft insulation. It is equally at home under a G4 Jacket or as an out later running into the coffee shop.

4. Spirit River UV

We love UV everything. We put it in our trout and steelhead patterns. We also add just a little to most of our salt patternes. Any fly tyer would love to add these great materials to their tying table.

5. A New Pack

Picture

A New pack makes a great gift for the fly fisher in your life. Pictured are bags from Simms, Fishpond, Umpqua, Clear Creek and Sage.

6. A new A Marblehead Flyfisher Shop Box

Picture

A Marblehead Flyfisher shop box makes a great gift. We stock these rugged and affordable boxes in several different sizes and configurations. Pictured above is the largest option which makes a great box for the boat of for those monster streamer patterns that always get mangled in smaller boxes.

7. A new running line

Picture
Running lines have made some big advances in recent years. We are most excited about Rio's Connect Core none stretch running line and Grip shooter running line. The connect core features Rios new non stretch core that provides great feel. It also shoots much better than previous fly line based running lines. If you or the angler in your life has switched to mono based running lines for shoot ability the Connect Core running lines deserve another look. The Grip shooter takes Rio's best selling flat mono running line adds a coated handling section to the front of the line. this eliminates the slipping many anglers experienced with mono. Both lines feature welded loops for easy connection to backing and head.

8. Simms Taco wader and boot bag

Picture

This is one of top selling luggage items. The Simms Taco Wader Bag is so simple  and effective. It holds a pair of waders and boots and doubles as a changing platform for the parking lot.  Vents on the sides allow your gear to start drying on the way home. It makes a great gift for the fly fisherman that has everything.

9. G.Loomis NRX 8 Wt

Picture
We love the  G.Loomis NRX 8 wt. It has all the power you will ever need plus a light tip. It loads at distance and in close. It's swing weight is noticeably lighter than previous generation rods.

10. Umpqua hooks

Picture
Picture

Why not try some new hooks. The shop is packed with hooks from Tiemco and Mustad. We have picked out two of our favorite styles here.

The 8089 NPis a nickel played version of everyone's favorite bass hook. We've tied flies on this hook that have caught striper, largemouth, smallmouth, bluefish, musky, snook, redfish, lady fish, jack and mangrove snapper.

The 2499 SPBL is the toughest little hook on the market. We use it to tie all of our egg, sucker spawn, and worm patterns. We even use it for some terrestrial and serendipity style patterns. The hook is extra strong and extra sticky with its barbless super point.

11. Lamson Speedster Fly Reel

Picture

The Lamson Speedster is a large arbor reel with style. We love the Art Deco lines and super fast pick up the large arbor design offers. Like all Lamson reels the conical drag is maintenance free and will stop a truck.

12. A new Renzetti Vise

Picture

What fly tyer wouldn't like a new vise. If the angler in your home doesn't have a Renzetti or other premium vise they may be due for an upgrade. A nice vise will last a lifetime and provide hours of enjoyment while not on the water.

13. Redington Butter Stick Modern Fiberglass Rod

Picture

We love the Redington Butter Sticks. So much is made over distance and throwing right loops into the wind. While the majority if our fishing is in close where these shorter fiberglass sticks shine. Whether your chasing brookies in a small stream or slamming sunfish on the Brandywine you need to experience the fun these rods provide. If you do not have a short glass stick in your arsenal you are missing out. We keep pulling ours out of the quiver.

Articulated tying class

11/18/2013

Comments

The Articulated tying class wrapped up this past Wednesday. During the past four weeks we really had a great time tying some really cool patterns. Big, articulated "meat" flies are fun to tie and even more fun to fish. Having a class based on these type of flies was a new venture for us and we think it was a huge success. When setting up this class we wanted to chose patterns that could be fished in our local waters and had crossover between Trout, Smallmouth and Salt Water species. We also wanted the class to have some diversity in fly design. One of the most important features in Articulated fly design is the head of the fly. We chose four very different head designs on four very different, but very effective patterns.

In week one we tied Kelly Galloup's Pearl Necklace. This fly employs a Fish Skull for a head and lots of marabou in the tail. I have had good success with this fly on both Smallmouth and Trout. I have not fished it in the salt yet, but I am confident this fly will be right at home in the maw of a big 'ole Striper.
Picture
Week two had us tying another Galloup pattern, the T&A. This pattern uses a stacked wool head and tons of marabou on both the front and rear hooks. Great for a wide profile bait fish like  juvie Trout, Fallfish, Mullet or Bunker,.TThe colors of this pattern are limited only by the tyers imagination.
Picture
We may have pushed the envelope a little on week three and we tied a triple articulated  beast from the mind of Rich Strolis. The Juggernaut, while easy to tie is not for the faint of heart. At a full 7" long this fly is definitely a "big fly big fish" candidate, but because of the design it is surprisingly light and easy to cast. The new Fish Mask was used on our fly, this may be my favorite new product form the Flymen company.
Picture
Our forth and final pattern was another Galoup pattern called the Boogie Man. This Was my most consistent Smallmouth pattern this summer and I have been having some success with it on local Trout, in a scaled down version. This fly swims like crazy and has an action like no other articulated streamer I have seen to date. The Mallard Flanks on the top of the fly give it the sick swimming action. The original pattern is tied with a wool head like the T&A series. We decided to change the head to a stacked deer hair head to add another dimension to the class.
Picture
Here is a video I shot of the Boogie Man moving through the water. You can really see the tail action of this fly here.
Below is a slideshow of the pictures taken from the four classes. I hope the guys in the class had as much fun attending the class as I did instructing it. It was truly a humbling experience to have people come out and watch me tie, an experience I am thankful for. Thank you to all that attended, I appreciate the support!

                                                                                                                                                      Tight lines...

New for 2013 from Renzetti

2/16/2013

Comments

With Fly tying classes in full swing and our new Smallmouth class getting ready to start we thought it would be a great time to showcase some of the great new products from Renzetti.  Renzetti has long been the leader Tru- rotary fly tying vises, this year they have added 3 new traveler vises to there already full line of great tying tools.
Picture
The Renzetti Traveler 2000 offers the beginner
as well as the experienced tyer a True Rotary
vise and a long lasting piece of equipment with
the great features that Renzetti is known for.
The vise offers quality, versatility, portability,
and affordability

Picture
Taking a cue from the many positive responses from tiers who love the look of our stylish Special Edition Master vise we are now offering the Traveler 2300 Series vises. Like all Renzetti's
its great looks are befitting its great performance. When you have to travel this is the vise you
want to tie on, and if anyone's watching you'll look good doing so.  Available with standard or saltwater jaws this is a great package in a black anodized finish.

Picture
Vise Travel Bag
Bag this! Or at least your valuable fly tying goods when you're on the move. Renzetti is proud to offer a virtually indestructible padded travel
bag made from 1680 grade ballistic material to store your vise, tools and
other essential fly tying items. The bag features a cleverly designed zippered removable center divider so you can store and organize items as
conditions dictate.

Picture
Renzetti offers a full line of bobbins to accommodate different tying needs. They feature bobbins with varying combination of tube lengths and diameters. The standard length tube is 2" and the extended length version is 21/2". The small diameter tube is 3/32" and the large diameter tube is 1/8".

With the exception of the Ultra Midge Bobbin and the Lead Wire and Tinsel Bobbin, we use rubies in our bobbins for ultra smooth thread delivery and excellent wear resistance. Our unique, tapered protrusion insures maximum thread spool retention.
Renzetti Bobbins are manufactured in the USA.

Picture
The Renzetti Soft Tool Caddy was designed by Andy Renzetti and it is made with a special non skid  foam. This tool caddy is like no other. Because of its special foam the tool caddy sits firmly on any surface and its design accommodates any tool. This may well be one of the most important pieces of tying gear you can purchase. Great for keeping all of your expensive tying tools neat and organized.

Terry has been tying on Renzetti vises and using their products for over 25 years. He still has the original Traveler vise he purchases at an Army Navy store in Chicago, heck that is the vise I use to tie Weenies, Worms and Shad flies for the shop. The shop is fully stocked with Renzetti products to fill all of your tying needs. To see more of the great Renzetti products click here. If you would like to "test drive" these or one of the other great products from Renzetti stop in and take a look, you will be glad you did.
