We would like to invite you to our second annual Holiday Open House. Come join us Saturday December 15th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm for good food, great friends, and plenty of fly fishing talk for everyone. Be there as we unveil the new shop logo. We will have plenty of new shop hats and window stickers so  you can show your "Marblehead" pride.

Come meet the president of Niethe Associates LLC, Andrew Niethe. Andrew will be helping us launch two new product lines:

We will have the full line of Galvin reels on display for you to see. We will also have plenty of Clear Creek gear including the new Spite Hill lumbar pack. In conjunction with handling his product lines Andrew is a master tube fly designer and he will be demonstrating his skills at the bench.
  Stop by to meet local artist Bart Gelesh. Here is an excerpt from Bart's website;

My name is Bart Gelesh and I paint fish.   I’m an avid fisherman in both fresh and saltwater but my interest is not restricted to just game fish.  I’m also a huge fan of America’s lesser known natives and I keep several aquariums full of beautiful wild caught specimens I’ve collected with friends in my travels.

While I do paint some of the more popular species in the angling world, when possible I like to shine a light on some of our lesser known fishes.  Through my work I hope to create an awareness of the wonderful aquatic diversity that surrounds us and share my passion for life on, in, and around the water.

Feel free to please contact me at [email protected] with any questions, requests, or comments.

Bart Gelesh

Here is a sample of some of his work and it is absolutely beautiful! This may be a great way to "immortalize" your fish of a lifetime.

Fishing Report 11-12-12

11/12/2012

Comments

Well in the almost two weeks following Hurricane Sandy have been interesting. We have seen our rivers swell to overwhelming proportions  only to return very quickly to normal or below normal flows. Things at IRI are a mess with Rt 1 south being closed for several days due to sand on the roadway. If you are down that way please stop in and support out friends down south at Old Inlet Bait and Tackle. Reports were almost 20 inches of water in the shop. I am sure they could use some good business.

Rick and I did get out on Sunday the 4th. This would mark the first time this year we went to heavy socks, fleece pants, and Windstopper hats and gloves. The air temp didn't get too far into the 40's that day, water temp's were around 49. The water was high and running hard, but it was clear. Surprising as we were only a few days removed from the Hurricane.  Long leaders, lots of weight. and tandem nymph rigs were the order of the day.
Picture
It is always fun to re-rig in weather like this.
We started at the first productive spot and "leap frogged" each other up the river. I started with a #14 prince and a #16 Flashback PT. I believe Rick had a Copper John and a PT. We were fortunate enough to get in to fish relatively quickly, This wild brown was the first to come to hand for me.
Picture
The red dots on the adipose is a dead giveaway.
We continued moving up stream at a snails pace being sure to cover a piece of water thoroughly before moving on. Winter conditions were in full effect as it seemed as if the drift was not absolutely perfect the fish would not take.

Rick into a good one
Picture
This was a nice wild brown.
As we moved up river We both noticed fish striking at our indicators. I actually had a trout hit the indicator, roll down and had it pulling for a few seconds. He just would not let go. All of a sudden the line went slack. I pulled up my rig and my indicator was gone. The Trout pulled it right off of the leader. I yelled up stream to Rick to show him, then I thought "I hope he is smart enough to spit it out". We looked down stream and could see it floating away. It was one of the weirdest things I have ever seen.

After that we both switched to a Dry and Dropper set up. Rick stuck with that the rest of the day, I on the other hand,  spent the afternoon switching from a tandem indicator rig to a D and D set up. I just could not decide which was better. I would fish a run with the D and D set up, then go back and come back through with the tandem rig. It was an effective way to cover the water, but I spent a lot of time tying rigs.

All in all we had a great day capped off by this beautiful rainbow Rick landed right at dark. Even though we were cold, tired and hungry when we got back to the truck, I believe it was worth every minute of it.

Remember at the widest point the boot is almost 5.5 inches.
Reports from the White Clay, West branch of the Octoraro and the East Branch of the Brandywine have been positive. Water temps are holding in the low to mid 50's. Fish are there to be had with the most active times being the hours between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Caddis and Midges have been coming off with some regularity. A #16 tan body Elk Hair Caddis with a bead head Caddis larva or a Zebra Midge would be a deadly combo. A small Bugger in a size 10 swung in the current should produce fish as well. In the winter we usually tend to stay on the darker side of things and black, brown, or olive would be a good choice. If you get no action try white or chartreuse. The main thing is to cover the water thoroughly before moving on.  Patience is the most important piece of equipment you can have in winter time fishing.

As mentioned earlier the storm has wreaked havoc on the IRI area. Bill O'Connor was at the inlet this past weekend. He fished the North Jetty. He said the water was still pretty cloudy and there were very few birds working. The bait folks were doing ok with the Tog, but not much in the way of Stripers. Bill did see a few small pods of bait fish, but no fish were on them.

We have some warmer weather coming up this week. That might help our salt water fishing for next weekend. In the meantime Trout fishing should hold strong through the winter.

                                                                                                                          Tight Lines...Tim

New Croakies gear available now

11/8/2012

Comments

We all know there is no substitute for good gear, and the most important piece of equipment to the fly fisher can be a good pair of glasses. Good eye wear can be a sizable investment and like any investment must be protected. The old saying goes the first check you write every month is for the mortgage, but the next one is for the insurance. Well we have some good insurance to protect your glasses.

Croakies have been proudly made in the USA since 1977. Their eye glass retainers are designed to be functional as well as stylish. Think of how many times you have had your glasses on the top of your head or hat just to have them fall off when you looked up at the sky or down to the water. Or think about setting them down and forgetting them or putting them in the seat of your car and then sat on them and broke them. Trust me, any and every way you can destroy a pair of glasses I have done it.

Nothing says comfort quite like Croakies® Suiters®. Made from soft and durable knitted yarn, our Suiters are designed to rest comfortably around the neck or back of the collar. The Suiters feature a sliding bead that provides a great deal of adjustability. Pull the bead all the way up the retainer for a tight, secure fit or loosen the bead at the end of retainer for an unconstrained, relaxed fit. Either way, you choose the most comfortable fit for your current level of activity.

Croakies® ARC family is a collection of the most technologically advance eye wear retainers ever designed.  The ARC System, ARC Monofilament, and ARC Endless are each attractive with a low profile / technical look.  The materials are lightweight & waterproof, with technically advanced features that are designed for adjustment.

We just received a bunch of new gear from Croakies. Many different fish prints are available, two different ARC styles in several color options, hat keepers and one of the coolest magnetic net keepers I have seen in a while. Quality gear from a company based right in Jackson Hole Wyoming, how can you go wrong. Stop in and check out all of the cool, new stuff.

Sage and Redington light Spey / switch rod review

11/6/2012

Comments

As many know, I can be found chasing many species of fish with my Spey rods, when not guiding. I just PLAIN enjoy casting and fishing these rods. With the introduction of lighter line weighted Light Spey / Switch rods, trouting and river bass fishing have entered the world of “two handed fly rod fishing”. Of late, Sage and Redington have the latest in 4 weight Light Spey / Switch rods and Rio has introduced the 275 grain Skagit and Scandi heads to match these magic wands. WOW, how cool can this get!?!
Picture
Picture
Sage 4116-4 ONE: I matched up my floating Light MOW Tip to the 275 grain Skagit Short Head and began casting on the Brandywine River. Once I got over the fact it wasn’t my 7 or 8 weight rod(s), I started casting short, then longer, then long. I threw Ska-Oppers and streamers with 10-12 foot leaders. After a few minutes I got lost in this rod, WOW! It pitched line like my heavier rods, even with some wind. Of course when I kicked my 1st mend, the whole line flew upstream, because it was so light. When I switched over to some T-8 MOW tips, I figured the challenges would begin; NOT to be! This rod JACKS line, that’s all there is to it. Did I mention that this rod is handsome, not that this is very important to me. I can’t wait to get my first shad, smallie and trout on the end of this stick. GREAT rod, awesome job, Sage!!!

Redington 4109-4 Prospector: This is a different animal than the Sage ONE; softer with a different flex point. I matched up the same Floating Light MOW Tip to the 275 Skagit Short Head. Once again, I needed to erase my 7 & 8 weights from my mind. I threw the same Ska-Oppers and streamers. After settling down a LOT, I just let the rod do all of the work and casts began to head for the horizon. If I punched too hard, casts piled up, but when I let it “all ride”, line disappeared from my fingers. The rod was easy in my hand, light and very “caster friendly”. Distance came up a bit shorter and casting heavier MOW tips didn’t come as easy as the ONE. The 275 Grain head felt a bit “chunky” on this rod for me. I need to put some lighter grain lines on this one to see where it falls in my arsenal. The Prospector definitely has game!
