Well, we got some much needed rain this weekend. I fished the river Saturday morning before I opened the shop. The water was up, but the color was not bad. I fished a section that I don't normally wade fish. It was a tough, deep wade, but absolutely worth it. A quick temp of the water showed me the temps are holding solid between 76 and 79 degrees. I waded into position and started pounding the banks with a big rattle Clouser. I figured they would be holding tight to the banks in the slower water and the rattle, I hoped, would be like a dinner bell. I managed a few fish including my best so far this year.

Saturday night saw HEAVY rain upstream in the Downingtown area. This caused high, dirty water and un-fishable conditions. The Chadds Ford meter showed at the highest point it was running just shy of 600 cfs.

By Sunday evening the river had calmed dawn quite a lot. Flows were just under 200 cfs, and the water was clear. a 79 degree water temp had me thinking topwater and had a blast with Bass, Pan fish, and trophy Fallfish all coming on topwater patterns.

This is the best Smallmouth year I can remember. Get out and fish!

The Brandywine is on fire right now. Smallies can be had from the surface to the bottom of the river. On top poppers and sliders have been the ticket  also the Brandywine Ska-Hopper has brought many fish to hand. Under the surface a variety of streamers, Buggers, Crayfish, and the "Ugly Bug" have all been consistent producers. Water temps are holding in the mid to high 70's, perfect for our bronzed back friends. It looks like we are in for a major storm as I type this, that could be just what we need to raise the water levels up a bit.

This is the best time of year to be on the river, get your gear and get out there.
